Nestled on the west side of Baranof Island,
Sitka is flanked on the east by majestic snow-capped mountains, and on the
west by the Pacific Ocean. Thought to be the most beautiful of
southeast Alaska cities, Sitka is located in what is often called the
"Panhandle" region of Alaska. Along the Inside passage you will find a
number of small villages and towns. Sitka is one of the oldest of these
settlements, believed to have been settled by the Tlingit nearly 10,000
years ago. Located in the heart of the Tongass National Forest, Sitka is the
perfect place to explore the forest, ocean and small town hospitality of
Southeast Alaska.
The greater Sitka area offers an abundance of
opportunities for people to enjoy outdoor nature-based recreational
activities. The extensive trail system alone is a tremendous resource that
could be much more effectively utilized by visitors. Knowledge of the area,
gear and equipment availability, and transportation are valuable services
that could be developed and offered by the Fisherman's Quay and tenant
businesses.
Sitka's labor force is well educated and
considered to be industrious, creative and independent-minded. Many in the
labor force are under-employed and anxious for an opportunity to improve
themselves and work in a challenging field of endeavor.
Sitkan's are also extremely well connected to the Internet with both 56K and
DSL Service through local Internet providers.
